Name: Wally Moffett
Uniform Selection--at one time or another: TBD
Wally is one of the original Niwot Community Semi-Marching Free Grange Band members, performing at the dedication of the Niwot bandstand July 4, 2005. In fact, Wally procured the first music for the band from the EL JEBEL Shrine Band in Denver, where Wally has played since 2002. He joined the Niwot band 48 hours after playing with the Shrine Band.
Wally began his musical career at age 13 in 1948, growing up in Superior, Wisconsin and Duluth, Minnesota. He began playing because, “I liked music.” He did take some time off between gigs (from 1952 to 2002) but the 50-year layoff has not dimmed his enthusiasm for music.
The Heatherwood resident has lived in Boulder County for 60 years, and has been married to the same woman for the last 55 years. Wally is a retired aerospace engineer in RFI (radio frequency interference) for Ball Corporation, where he worked with another of the band’s tuba corps, Mike Weiss. In fact, Wally helped recruit Mike to the band. Mike admitted to playing tuba in high school, but protested that he had not played in over 30 years, and did not have an instrument. Wally said, “No problem, I have an extra tuba I can loan you.” (How often does that happen?)
At Ball Corporation, Wally worked on the first design and firing of ICBMs (Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles). “I worked design development test launch of the first instrument to fly on the Space Shuttle,” Wally said. He is also an amateur radio operator and did taxes for the AARP for ten years after retirement from Ball. His favorite song is Orange Blossom Special “just ‘cause Chet Atkins was so great.” Wally’s favorite band experience was the year he was President of the Shrine Band. “I coordinated and played with all the North American Shrine Band Association Bands,” he said.
