Name: Paulette Zimmerman

Instrument: Clarinet

Uniform Selection: Green jacket with black piping

Paulette Zimmermann, known as “Mrs. Z” to her students, is an elementary school music teacher for the St. Vrain Valley School District. The 26-year Colorado resident formerly taught at Niwot Elementary School, and currently teaches K-5 music at Centennial Elementary School in Firestone.

Even though she teaches music daily, when she joined the Niwot Community Semi-Marching Free Grange Band, it had been 37 years since she had last played the clarinet in a band.

Although she now lives west of Niwot, Paulette began playing clarinet in Conrad, Montana, where she grew up.  “All my brothers and sisters were in band before me,” she said, so it seemed natural for her to begin playing clarinet in fifth grade. Her favorite band experience?  “When I was a senior in high school, the band teacher was away for a week.   I got to direct the band during school practice and then directed during a basketball game.”  (Now we know who our back-up semi-conductor is.)

Teaching music and playing the clarinet are not her only musical interests.  “I just started taking djembe drumming lessons and am having a great time!” Her favorite song is China Grove by the Doobie Brothers.  “It makes me want to dance!”
