Meet Our Musicians--Band Member Bios

Name: Kirk "Captain Kirk" Stewart

Instrument: Euphonium

Uniform Selection: Civil War Regimental Band Corporal and reminiscent of Niwot's original town band uniform (post 1876)

Kirk Stewart, Ph.D., PE, also affectionately known as “Captain Kirk,” plays euphonium for the Niwot Semi-Marching Free Grange Band, but is also an accomplished performer on Bagpipes (Great Highland and Shuttle) and Fife (B-flat).

Although he now lives in Niwot, Kirk grew up in La Jolla, California, and first came to Colorado to attend the U.S. Air Force Academy.  He returned to Colorado 34 years ago for good, and took up the bagpipes in 1986. He began playing to “get my mind off of work after hours,” he said. “It was going to be either bluegrass banjo or bagpipes.”

Kirk played one semester of tuba in 7th grade, but didn’t return to music for many years, adding the euphonium and the fife to his repertoire after mastering the bagpipes.  During his last stint in grad school, he played the bagpipes for weddings and funerals to earn extra money.  He continues to play the bagpipes and is part of the Northern Colorado Fife and Drum Corps which performs in Niwot every 4th of July.

Kirk is a member of the Rotary Club of Niwot, and is responsible for the band’s website, hosted by the Rotary. He does taxes as a Seniors Tax-Aide Counselor for AARP.

He describes his band position as “3rd Euphonium,” although usually there are only two members in the section.  “I took up a musical instrument a little later in life and am just happy to be allowed to attempt to play while I try to learn and improve,” he said.

In his other life, Kirk was an aerospace engineering and management consultant.  He has worked for The Aerospace Corporation, Ball Aerospace, and the U.S. Air Force, and other government agencies.

His favorite song is Scotland the Brave. “It’s my heritage,” he explains. His favorite band experience is the massed pipe bands on parade. “Very Stirring.”
